Discovering the Telemark Canal in Nordkapp Enduro 805

A journey through Norway in miniature

The Telemark Canal, completed in 1892, is a 105-kilometre waterway stretching from Skien in the southeast to Dalen in the northwest. It is marked by a series of 18 locks that lift boats 72 meters through the heart of Telemark County. The canal offers an extraordinary journey through Norway's diverse landscape, and for the Nordkapp team, it was an adventure that promised both challenges and rewards. We embarked on this trip aboard the Enduro 805, eager to see what awaited us.

Skien Lock: Embarking on the journey

We began our journey early at Skien Lock, the first entry point into the canal. There was a shared sense of anticipation as we prepared to navigate the locks. The team was excited yet focused, knowing that the canal would require attention and coordination. Before setting off, we took a moment to explore Skien's city centre. In this area, we recommend visiting Brekkeparken, the preserved wooden houses of Snipetorp, and the beautiful Bakkestranda. The exploration was refreshing and set the tone for the day. The Enduro 805, with its intuitive handling, quickly proved to be a reliable partner in this adventure.

Navigating the Skien Lock was our introduction to the mechanics of the canal. The process was straightforward, and any initial nervousness quickly faded as the lock filled and our boat began to rise. After passing through the lock, we moored briefly at the Hjellen guest harbour to stretch our legs and take in more of Skien's charm before returning to the boat. This pause allowed us to enjoy the area and made the transition into the canal's rhythm smooth. The lock passage set a relaxed pace for the day, allowing us to settle into the journey ahead.

Ulefoss Locks: A Glimpse into History

Ulefoss Locks were our next major stop, and they came with a sense of history. Passing the old Ulefos Ironworks added a layer of context to the trip – a reminder that this canal was once a vital commercial route. The team was in good spirits as we navigated through the locks, chatting about the historical significance and how seamlessly the Enduro 805 handled the passage. We didn't linger long, but the sense of moving through history was palpable.

Eidsfoss Locks

The team took a brief stop at the Eidsfoss Locks. This two-chamber lock system, the second in the Norsjø-Bandak connection, was straightforward. By this point, we had become accustomed to the rhythm of locking in and out. At the bottom, there was a waiting dock for leisure boats, providing a perfect spot for us to take a break. Some team members even walked from here to the next lock at Vrangfoss, enjoying the surroundings.

Vrangfoss Locks: The Heart of the Canal

Vrangfoss, the most extensive lock system on the Telemark Canal, was the most anticipated challenge. The five-chamber system turned out to be a smooth process, and we explored the area on foot, visiting the lockmaster's house and discussing the canal's engineering with the local staff. Apparently, you can even rent the lockkeeper's cottages during the summer. An interesting getaway on your next holiday?

We shared a sense of accomplishment as we passed through each chamber, rising 23 meters in total. The Enduro 805's precision and control were particularly appreciated here, making what could have been a daunting task enjoyable.

Lunde Lock: The Social Hub

Lunde Lock brought us back into a more active setting. The area around the lock was bustling, with other boaters and locals adding to the lively atmosphere. We swiftly docked the Enduro 805 and spent some time ashore. The mood was light, and the team had a sense of camaraderie.

The Lunde Lock is ideal for travelling with family. It offers ziplining, obstacle courses, and barbecue spots. If you visit in June, you might catch the Sluserock Festival, which is aimed at young people but features well-known artists.

The team settled on a calm stroll along the canal and then grabbed a quick bite at the Lunde Lock Inn, a great dining spot along the Telemark Canal.

Kjeldal and Hogga Locks

The locks at Kjeldal and Hogga were smaller and less complex. Kjeldal Lock, a single-chamber lock, lifted us three meters higher, while Hogga Locks, with its two chambers, raised us seven meters further into the journey.

We made several stops at guest harbours throughout the canal, though time constraints meant we could only explore some. The guest harbours in Skien and Notodden offer excellent opportunities to explore the towns. If you moor at Lårdal, you'll be perfectly positioned for the Lårdalsstigen hike, which offers stunning views over Bandak Lake and the Telemark Canal.

Other notable guest harbours include Dalen, Kviteseid, Nesøya (Notodden), and Norsjø Ferieland, each offering unique activities. While we didn't have the time to take advantage of all these opportunities, knowing they were there added to the sense of possibilities along the journey.

After a long day of exploring, we reached Dalen, where the canal meets its end. The team stayed the night at the historic Dalen Hotel. Built in 1894, the hotel has hosted notable guests such as Emperor Wilhelm of Germany and King Leopold II of Belgium.

The hotel's grand architecture and serene setting provided a perfect backdrop for reflecting on the adventure. We spent the evening at the hotel, sharing stories of the day over a beer. The next day, we grabbed an early breakfast and started our journey home through the canal.

The Telemark Canal is an experience that combines history, nature, and a sense of quiet adventure. It has much more to offer than we got to experience on this trip, making us eager to return for more.

For the Nordkapp team, it was an opportunity to explore a unique part of Norway with a vessel that enhanced every aspect of the trip. The Enduro 805 made the challenges of the canal feel manageable and the moments of beauty more memorable. As we reached the end of the canal at Dalen on the first day, and the harbour back home the next day, there was a shared sense of achievement – not just in what we had seen, but in how we had experienced it together.
