 Historical Background

The concept of RIB vessels originated in the mid-20th century, driven by the need for reliable and versatile watercraft. Originally made for military and rescue work, their strong build and flexibility quickly attracted the leisure market. Thus, they have been an integral part of SAR services like rescue missions and for use in coast guards.

 Evolution and Innovation

Over the years, RIBs have undergone significant advancements. Manufacturers have invested in innovative materials and technologies, enhancing both performance and comfort.

Designers create modern RIBs for a variety of on-water adventures, including leisurely cruises and high-speed activities. Sophisticated outboard engines have made them increasingly fuel efficient and agile in rough waters. Who could deny that a journey at sea aboard a RIB offers an exhilarating experience?

The RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) is a versatile vessel designed for practical use while boasting exceptional seagoing capabilities. This blend has made it one of the most popular boat choices for vacation homes and transport in archipelagos around the world.

RIBs typically feature open deck spaces for passengers and luggage, with many models accommodating a significant number of passengers, particularly in category C.

A RIB is a great option for a boat that provides high stability when docked and requires less upkeep.

Using a RIB reduces the risk of damaging gelcoats and is usually easier to maintain than traditional fiberglass boats.

What type of boat is the RIB? 3 key points to increase your understanding

Here are some of our key points of the rib:

  1. Flexibility: The ability to step into the boat and set off within seconds is a significant advantage. It makes life at sea easier.
  2. Driveability: Two words: test drive. Make sure to test drive to find the boat and hull fitting your needs the most. Symmetrical tubes and asymmetrical tubes are important for understanding driving characteristics. It is a good idea to test them before buying.
  3. Comfort: In general RIB boats display a high comfort level, because of its extreme tolerances to rough seas. Still, the various hulls and tube designs will make the boats differ from one another.

Looking for more agile driving characteristics? Look for the steeper V-hulls. Planing thresholds are typically less in the RIB than that of conventional boats.

The Airborne series from Nordkapp

The Airborne series from Nordkapp was launched in 2021, with the Airborne 7 as the first boat in this new development. The design, planning and manufacturing took place over a 10 year period, carefully thought out to bring something new to the RIB market place. Assymetrical tubes, improved sheltering and smart features were some of the unique qualities of these vessels.

Aksel Lund Svindal is an experienced RIB owner since many years. Aksel has spent several hundred hours in a selection of boats, and gave his thoughts on why the design of the Airborne RIB boats from Nordkapp takes performance to the next level.

Throughout 2022 and 2023, the Airborne 6.3 and Airborne 8 became new additions to the esteemed series, bringing both an agile commuter model and a robust all-rounder to the market.

The hull design, operational features, and deck layout.

These are the elements you can anticipate from a RIB.

A RIB is a vessel frequently noted for its sporty driving traits and excellent maneuverability in adverse weather.

The pontoons

The configuration, form, and positioning of the pontoons significantly affect how the RIB performs on the water. Certain RIBs have larger pontoons that sit lower.

Manufacturers typically make pontoons in either PVC, Hypalon, or Neoprene. The latter two are more expensive materials, often used for high performance boats. All three materials are high-quality materials, so PVC tubes ona RIB should not scare you away.

Conventional pontoons make contact with the water surface at nearly any velocity. With this kind of pontoons, you might experience a somewhat reduced maintenance schedule, cleaning them throughout the boating season.

Assymetrical tube (pontoon) design has been popular with RIB drivers. The Airborne-series from Nordkapp are one of the first boats displaying this feature. Assymetrical tubes (pontoons) provides less drag and resistance, reduce growth and improve the sporty driving characteristics.

This setup gives you a smooth and comfortable ride. You will notice an increasing tilt when you turn. This creates less of a "go-cart feeling."

The g-forces act more sideways. It feels more like driving a center console boat.

  • When you elevate the pontoons, the driving experience resembles that of a fiberglass center console boat. Consequently, it will tilt more significantly, with gravitational forces acting more vertically. These pontoons generally require less upkeep throughout the season because they primarily sit above the waterline.
  • In most RIBs, the driver console is in the center of the boat or slightly to the right. There are also storage compartments and deck space. The minimal freeboard allows for easy passage on both port and starboard.

Speed

  • Larger RIBs, which are 6.5 meters and longer, often reach speeds of about 50 knots with bigger engines. Remember that the RIB has a low freeboard and a pontoon design.
  • Some RIBs have larger pontoons that sit lower. This design provides stability when the boat docks.
  • The pontoons touch the water at almost any speed. This gives it different driving traits than a center console boat. Particularly at elevated speeds.
  • Many people view the RIB as a stable type of boat at higher speeds. This stability comes from its contact with both the pontoons and the water.

What should we highlight about RIB equipment and standards?

Windshielding - how to keep your passengers comfortable

People use RIB boats on all continents around the world. This requires different needs for windshielding. In warmer regions, people favor smaller windscreens that allow airflow, while in colder areas, they prefer larger windscreens.

Traditionally, windshields have been smaller than those on fiberglass center consoles. However, recent developments have changed this a bit.

Key questions you could ask yourself before buying a RIB boat:

  • In what climate do I use my boat?

Many RIB designs feature smaller windshields, which allows wind to flow into the cockpit. Nordic design facilitates less flow of air and increased shelter from weather. This gives higher comfort regardless of weather. If you use your boat in rougher, colder climates, a good tip is to check canopy solutions on your designated boat.

  • How do I use my boat?

Daytripping or merely transportation? Look for boats suiting your purpose, being daytripping with friends and family or transporting people and goods to and from your cottage at sea. The RIB boats are often flexible with regards to layout.

It is important to check the layout options when buying a boat. This will help you find one that fits your needs.

  • What is the usual number of people I onboard?
  • What kind of waters do I navigate?

A good tip is to try different driving positions in various boats. This will help you see how the windshield protects you while seated.

Balance family outings and sport with the canopy solutions

If you plan to use your RIB all year, getting a sprayhood and a canopy could be helpful. These additions help you stay safe from harsh weather like wind, rain, and waves. They keep you dry and warm in tough conditions.

The sprayhood is usually easy to assemble, but test it in calm conditions. The sprayhood

Upholstery is your key for well-being and pleasure

  • In pleasant weather, individuals frequently utilize the RIB with the cushions placed and secured. Nonetheless, you should verify where you can store these.
  • Examine the storage areas to see how you store the cushions. Certain RIB boats include a sprayhood/canopy or a harbor canopy, which also serves for cushion storage.
